SRH vs LSG Preview: Hyderabad Could See Another 400-Run Afternoon

April 5, 2026
Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Lucknow Super Giants

The match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants will take place in Hyderabad. At the time of writing, SRH is the only team that has passed 200 runs in both of their games this season. LSG had a rough outing, being completely bowled out for 141 and subsequently coming under increased scrutiny regarding the form of their batting lineup.

The match will start at 3:30 p.m. local time on Sunday, April 5, at Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium. Currently,SRH holds 5th place on the table with 1 win from 2 games and a positive net run rate, while LSG is in 8th place with 0 wins thus far.

The history of this matchup

The history of this matchup at this venue has had a tendency to provide some very exciting games. SRH, in one instance, viewed a target of 166 runs and chased it down without losing a wicket, doing so in just 9.4 overs. One year later, LSG was given a target of 191 runs on the same surface and successfully chased it down with plenty of time remaining, finishing the game in 16.1 overs.

As a result of both teams possessing such offensive firepower, any score that might appear to be substantial at lunchtime will appear to be easily obtainable as the match progresses.

Conditions at Uppal

It is anticipated that conditions at Uppal may improve significantly during the course of this match.

As such, multiple previews for this match have indicated similar sentiments: batting conditions should favour batters in Hyderabad, as there will be a degree of assistance to batters using fresh balls. As conditions settle down, batsmen will have a lot more freedom to play freely. One source states that averages for the surface would typically fall within the range of 170-180 runs; however, those that suggest that the surface may play flat on this day also suggest that expectations for scores could approach 210+. Weather is another variable.Hyderabad’s weather during the initial part of the matches is expected to hover between 34 and 35 degrees Celsius. By the beginning of matches, there is the risk of light showers before drying out toward the later evening. In other words, during the day match, it can make it difficult to consistently repeat slow balls, cutters and different hard lengths over the course of 20 overs.

Ultimately, the condition of the wicket at the time of the toss may be significantly less significant than it normally is here. A losing team can bat first and still be anxious with 205 runs, and a winning team chasing two wickets in the first two overs of the powerplay can still think that they are in the game.

The 2026 IPL

The 2026 IPL has already demonstrated the different sides of SRH. In their first match against RCB, SRH scored 201 runs but were beaten by 6 wickets and 26 balls remaining. They then responded by putting together a far more impressive performance for their second match against KKR, when they scored 226 runs and bowled the defending champions out of the total by 65 runs.

These two matches illustrate the potential of SRH’s batting and the uncertainty still lingering with its bowling until the team gets solidly into its bowling lengths and they can count on their fielding for support.

SRH were able to literally bat down the competition on more than one occasion, due to the explosive batting at the top of the order. For example, SRH had scored 264 runs in 15 overs and knocked off RCB’s total of 264 runs in 15 overs in their match against RCB, while on the other hand, in their match against KKR, Ishan Kishan had scored 80 runs in only 38 deliveries (after RCB had suffered early wickets) and Heinrich Klaasen had chipped in with 31 runs from just 31 balls and provided a major contribution to re-establishing SRH’s innings.

In two days, we had another exciting match featuring two of the best batsman in the world. This time it was Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma of the Sunrisers Hyderabad against the Kolkata Knight Riders. Both batsmen were on fire, with Head scoring 46 and Abhishek hitting 48 after only 21 balls. Together, they led the SRH to 84 runs for only 1 wicket in their first six overs. They were then able to keep up the scoring momentum with some impressive batting by Heinrich Klaasen (52 runs) and Nitish Kumar Reddy (39 runs), both after only 24 balls.

Although the Sunrisers will fear that other teams (especially the Lucknow Super Giants) will try to replicate this level of batting, the combination of Head and Abhishek does not only give them quick runs but also disrupt the way the bowling attacks, and fields are set up, as well as the pace of the games. With Ishan Kishan also batting in the middle and having both the ability to hit spin and seam with the same bat, SRH will feel comfortable in their mindset of being able to play very aggressively until the last ball of the innings. A player who has only recently joined the team in the form of Klaasen has shown that he can score 40 runs off only 18 balls on a number of occasions and always seems to perform at the same high level.

The dynamic of playing the SRH against the Lucknow Super Giants will also have the potential to tilt either way as soon as the match progresses past the phase where teams typically get into their batting grooves. If at the end of the first six overs, the SRH is sitting on 70 or more runs, the atmosphere in Hyderabad will likely resemble that of a music festival as opposed to the typical cricketing arena.

The issue of Pat Cummins

The issue of Pat Cummins resting for recovery due to his recent back injury will also have an impact on SRH in terms of their going into this match without him.

Cummins has been the backbone of the bowling attack this season due to his new-ball control and leadership in the field; he has provided a bit of added batting support for the team in late innings as well. The absence of Cummins has put that added responsibility on the shoulders of Jaydev Unadkat, Harshal Patel, and whichever overseas fast bowler was fit enough to start the match.

On a positive note for SRH, their backup bowling group stepped up in their match against the Kolkata Knight Riders and were just as capable as their starting group.Unadkat bowled 3 overs and had 3 wickets for 21 runs, Nitish bowled 2 overs for 17 runs, while Eshan Malinga’s 2 wickets came for only 14 runs in his 3 overs. The match with the RCB provided further confirmation that SRH can defend large totals even with their leading fast bowler missing.

Lucknow Could Not Start

Lucknow’s first match was defined by missed opportunities. On a red-soil pitch at their home ground in Lucknow, they batted first and were bowled out for just 141 runs, with Mitchell Marsh scoring 35, Abdul Samad registering 36, Rishabh Pant with a run-out for only 7 runs, and none of the other batsmen providing any significant contribution. The already small total of 141 was made even less defendable in this match due to the fact that Delhi successfully chased down the score of 145 with 17 balls remaining despite being 26 runs for 4 wickets down in the powerplay. LSG did a number of things well with the ball, but the total they produced was too small to defend successfully.

Given that LSG have so many talented players in their batting line-up (including Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran, Mitchell Marsh, and Aiden Markram), their performance with the bat was a long way off of what their batting order is capable of delivering. Playing against an experienced side like SRH requires an aggressive approach, or you may find yourself 30 runs behind the game before you even get to the middle overs. While Lucknow’s bold decision to open with Pant generated a buzz, the result ultimately didn’t live up to expectations, as LSG never really found their rhythm after he departed early. In light of that first encounter, however, LSG appear better suited to use Marsh and Markram to create a solid foundation, hold Pooran back as an explosive player, and allow Pant to enter the fray once the field is slightly rearranged due to the slowing of pace.

This doesn’t mean that Pant isn’t a talented player because he most certainly is; however, game flow dictates. The best possible scenario for Pant is to get to a point in the innings where he can identify a phase and then exploit that phase by executing a plan to attack one specific match-up, creating complete havoc over the course of two overs. Being sent into bat in the very first over against a new ball makes this scenario quite difficult to execute.

In addition to Pant, Pooran is an important piece of the puzzle, falling victim to Ngidi’s slower delivery during their first match, yet remaining the player most likely to hold his own against the SRH attack should the asking rate rise significantly. Therefore, it is imperative for LSG to have either Pooran or Pant dominate the 7-15 over period, as failure to do so would put enormous pressure on them during the final overs of the innings.

Lucknow’s pace bowling unit provides them with a valid opportunity to put pressure on the SRH side early.Mohammed Shami set an IPL record for most first-ball dismissals (five) by dismissing KL Rahul on his very first ball. Mohsin Khan’s bowling for LSG was just as dominant, with only 19 runs conceded in his spell of 4 overs, while Prince Yadav provided a spark with a 2 for 20 bowling display that resulted in the early loss of four wickets for only 26 runs for the Delhi Capitals.

This early burst by LSG is critical down the stretch because the two openers for Sunrisers Hyderabad aren’t comfortable being forced back, but with the right speed and bounce off hard lengths can be tempted into playing aggressive shots. Mohammed Shami’s seam position, Mohsin Khan’s angle and Prince Yadav’s aggressive style gives LSG a real opportunity to land a solid punch in this match.

Recent pre-match projections from the Financial Express have even suggested that Mayank Yadav and Anrich Nortje could be possible candidates in the playing XI, which reflects the desire of the franchise to maintain a pace attack, assuming fitness levels permit. Such a strategic play makes a great deal of sense when playing in Hyderabad, as pace alone can account for wickets even on a flat pitch.

This Rivalry Has More than Once

The wild nature of recent encounters between these two franchises has heavily shaped the context for this preview. An explosive encounter in May 2024 had the Sunrisers smashing 167 without any loss of wicket in the 9.4 overs face-off, while LSG had totalled only 165 for 4 in their innings playing in Hyderabad.

In a repeat performance one year later at the same venue, LSG turned the tables completely by chasing down the Sunrisers’ total of 191, reaching 193 for 5 after 16.1 overs. The recent encounter between SRH and LSG showcased both sides ability to post enormous scores with Nicholas Pooran leading his team to victory with an impressive 70 runs scored for Sunrisers Hyderabad. After this match, Sunrisers Hyderabad were left looking at an intimidating score from Lucknow Super Giants which was certainly not going to be enough for them to win their next game. In the rematch taking place in lucknow, a further example of this batting dominance emerged through some explosive batting performance from Sunrisers Hyderabad who responded to Lucknow Super Giants’s total of 205/7 by posting 206/4 after 18.2 overs on the same pitch. From these results alone, it should be clear that this is not a typical slow moving rivalry made up of teams grinding out results. Instead it is based off of quick bursts of runs scored during powerplays, along with one destructive match getting way out of hand, resulting in early collapse due to pressure.

Current Predictions of Teams

The current projections indicate that Sunrisers Hyderabad may line up with Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Heinrich Klaasen, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Liam Livingstone, Aniket Verma, Harsh Dubey, Harshal Patel, Jaydev Unadkat & Eshan Malinga. Further to this report about who may play for SRH it adds that Brydon Carse could become involved, assuming fitness allows for this, which will not be possible due to Pat Cummins’s absence from SRH’s squad.

Lucknow Super Giants is anticipated to base their eleven upon Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram, Rishabh Pant, Nicholas Pooran, Ayush Badoni, Abdul Samad, Mohammed Shami, Avesh Khan, Mayank Yadav, Anrich Nortje & Digvesh Rathi. This selection gives Pant the flexibility of going with a high volume seam attack or rolling with a high volume spin attack, depending upon what he perceives the conditions to be after 30 minutes of play.

The Key Moments

The first key moment is around the new-ball, the Lucknow Super Giants must win the first ball contest. If Shami and his bowling unit can get one of either Head or Abhishek out in the first two overs of play, then the rest of the match should play out normally.

The second critical moment of this contest revolves around Heinrich Klaasen & Nicholas Pooran, both teams will accept one early loss, however neither team will want to see the other team’s main damage dealer coming to the wicket when the ball isn’t swinging anymore.

The third key moment of this game involves a more subtle turning point in thought. Sunrisers Hyderabad will now know that they can defend a huge total (greater than 200 runs) even without Pat Cummins in the playing XI, as they did so at Eden Gardens. The Lucknow Super Giants on the other hand will need to still show that they can achieve a large total (greater than 200 runs) against a batting unit that doesn’t slow down for several overs.

Conclusion of This Match

Lucknow Super Giants vs Sunrisers Hyderabad at this time seems to favour the home side due to one reason, and that is that Sunrisers Hyderabad already appear to be a strong batting unit that can recover from one off crushing to produce over 210 runs. Whereas, Lucknow Super Giants appear to be a team that is still figuring out their best batting order & best rate to run the bases at this stage of the regular season based on what we have seen thus far.

This does not mean that Lucknow Super Giants should be dismissed easily, as they have two quality quicks who can in all likelihood challenge any top order batsman, and if either Nicholas Pooran or Rishabh Pant have a strong day, that can totally destroy a run chase in a very short amount of time. However, based solely on the run and volume of runs scored by Lucknow Super Giants during the past few weeks, combined with record of results at this ground, all signs at this afternoon’s match point towards the Sunrisers Hyderabad to post a score above 200. Therefore, selecting Sunrisers Hyderabad as the most secure team to post a score over 200 this afternoon is likely the safest way of reading how the match will play.
